Clinical joint assessment
Palpation of joint and muscles of mastication, range-of-motion measurement, occlusal evaluation and pain mapping.
Imaging interpretation
Panoramic OPG, CBCT and where indicated MRI — interpreted by a trained oral radiologist rather than read off a report.
Sleep & stress evaluation
Bruxism, sleep quality and stress contributors are screened — chronic TMJ disorders rarely have a single cause.
Treatment
Conservative first
Custom occlusal splints, jaw exercises, physiotherapy referral, anti-inflammatory protocols. Most TMJ disorders resolve without surgery.
Pharmacological management
Targeted use of muscle relaxants, NSAIDs and where appropriate adjunctive therapy — short-course, evidence-based.
Onward surgical referral
The minority of cases requiring arthrocentesis or surgery are referred to maxillofacial surgery with complete workup.

Almost certainly not. The vast majority of TMJ disorders are managed conservatively.
What scan do I need for TMJ?
It depends on the suspected pathology. We order CBCT or MRI only when the result will change management.
