Oral Cancer Screening in Mumbai

Oral cancer is one of the most detectable cancers — and one of the most treatable when found early. Structured specialist screening, following a systematic protocol across every mucosal surface, is how early detection actually happens. Dr. Bipin R. Upadhyay performs structured oral cancer screening at K.J. Somaiya Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai and at Reasonable Smile Dental Clinics, Ambarnath. Recommended annually for tobacco users, areca-nut chewers and patients with high-risk lesions.

Our approach

Visual & tactile examination

Systematic inspection of every mucosal surface plus bimanual palpation of tongue, floor of mouth and neck lymph nodes — done the same way every time so nothing is missed.

Risk profiling

Tobacco type, duration, alcohol exposure, betel quid, areca, occupational and family history — graded into actionable risk categories.

Lesion documentation

Clinical photography of any suspicious area for objective comparison at follow-up.

Treatment

Biopsy where indicated

Incisional biopsy under local anaesthesia for definitive histopathology. We do not 'wait and watch' a suspicious lesion.

Referral pathway

Confirmed malignancy is referred to head-and-neck oncology with full clinical handover. Pre-cancerous lesions are managed and surveilled by us directly.

Tobacco cessation

Behavioural support and pharmacotherapy referral — the single highest-yield intervention to prevent oral cancer.

Frequently asked

How often should I screen?

Yearly for all adults; every 6 months if you currently use any tobacco or areca product, or have a known potentially malignant lesion.

Is screening painful?

No. It is a thorough visual and tactile examination. Biopsy, if needed, is done under local anaesthesia and is well tolerated.
